Eric Reese - Aerostar Pilot
США
Добавлен 13 июл 2006
I sell residential real estate for a living at Compass Washington & fly the Worlds Fastest Piston Twin for fun.
As a child Eric would visit the Aerostar facility where his Dad, Dick Reese was Ted Smith's 3rd hire. Dick is responsible for a large portion of the design & looks of the Aerostar.
Having grown up around airplanes & flying with his Dad, Eric developed a love of flying & the Aerostar. While in college Eric earned his pilots license then went on to instruct & eventually fly for a number of Part 135 cargo operations. It was flying for the cargo operations when Eric was re-united with the Aerostar. Eric owned a flight school in California for a number of years before moving back to the Seattle area in 1995.
Eric has accumulated over 7000 hours of flight time with over 3000 in multiengine aircraft & holds CFI, CFII, MEI, ATP & Commercial Glider ratings.
Eric and his wife of 41 years live in Woodinville, WA & have a successful residential real estate business.

Two things: TPE331s would be truly righteous on an Aerostar. I have some training and operating manuals for all versions of the Aerostar. Is that something you'd be interested in?
PW-615A are a lot better! Email me about the other material.
Big Thank you from this side of the pond
It NEVER fails to amaze me how controllers know you just penetrated the clouds. The second you get into the white stuff and start bouncing around is EXACTLY when they call and give you a heading change or a full reroute.
Excellent video...👍🏻
your flaps are still down even after you mentioned that they were
Not sure what you are referring to. I assume the takeoff at ALW. Keep in mind the Aerostar's flaps are hydraulic and have no preselect for any setting. The handle has three positions, up, neutral and down. For takeoff the were set to 20° with the flap handle in the neutral position. Think of neutral as OFF. After takeoff I put the flap handle in the up position. Think of this is ON for UP. Once they were up, I put the handle back in the neutral position.
'79 Inter cooled Machen Modified 601 P Aerostar FAST...EST 1 hr/flight=1hr./maintenance
The comment about maintenance is absolutely not true with a caveat. A lot of these Aerostars have been minimally maintained. As a result there is a lot of maintenance since the old neglected stuff breaks. Treat you annuals as progressive restoration and the aircraft will treat you will.
“Font touch anything on the runway!” Proceeds to touch stuff on the runway. Lol.
My favorite plane❤
excellent work Eric! Living engineering history. Orders the book
What is the name and position with Aerostar of the gentleman speaking? an intro would help.
Hell Mr., I want to know, how about the price used Aerostar 600 or 700 on this time, please!
Worlds Fastest Piston Twin is Adam 500.
Very cool! I’ve always thought the Aerostar was a terrific looking airplane.
When I do that, someone, in the back, suddenly has to pee.
Great instructional value here. I had something similar happen to me in the T44 on one of my instrument events. I was doing a vor approach and was receiving vectors for the approach course. As I was twisting the app course into the hsi, my ip gave me a simulated emergency to handle. I stopped twisting and the cdi ended up at 20 radials short of the desired course. After handling the simulated, I was cleared for the approach and was waiting for the CDI to come in. My ip knew exactly what I was going to do. He noticed that I never got back to twisting the proper app course in and that I would wait for the cdi, which would have allowed me to go way passed the desired app course. He filled me in on what I was about to do wrong and I corrected it. I felt embarrassed, but it wasn’t the first or last time I’ll make a mistake and I learned from it. That’s why I like rnav approaches. Can’t twist wrong numbers in for those.😂
Just a beautiful aircraft I've watched most of your videos you do a great job of explaining the in,s and out,s of flying it😊
You look so happy doing this I can see the light in your eyes 🔥
Did you explain why there was an alarm sound going the whole time?
That is the Shadin Altitude Alerter. I will sound when getting close to the set altitude when climbing or descending. It will also warn you if you are getting off the set altitude. It is an annoying sound for sure.
Hi Eric 👋 Love your Aerostar video's 👌 Brilliant work ! I would like an Aerostar 👍 Keep the videos coming 😂👍
I wish I could've flown with my dad more. He passed while I was trying to complete navy flight school. He may not have been able to pin my wings on my chest, but Im sure he would've been the proudest dad out there.
LOVE your video's ! I'm looking for a good Aerostar to buy.. Any suggestions? Thank you for your great work here ✨
We like blonde...
There will be more.
I also once forgot my pitot tube covered, realised during takeoff run engine checks before rotate, my airspeed wasn’t alive, so I stopped and taxied off the runway
smart move and good awareness of what is going on during the takeoff run.
Beautiful, but getting into the historic category. Hey, why not !
Nice plane and family, you have a gorgeous co-pilot. I never realized what a pain it is to load an Aerostar. At one point everyone gives your call sign as 5-1s, even you. One thing I do not like is that you do mental checklists, not paper or call out various elements such as your gear up but once and a while. You seem to have a lot of experience but are just a bit too casual for me.
You do very well btw? I am a GA critic and you do it all well Eric.
Whatever happened to this airplane? was the annual completed?
It is still at Aerostar Aircraft waiting for funds to complete work to make it airworthy. Most likely for sale to the right buyer.
A QC for Boeing who’s still alive.
Awesome looking for an Aerostar next year or so, thanks
Loved my Aerostar 601P. In hindsight should have never sold it, just upgraded it with all the mods.
First twin I ever flown was a 701 love these planes
Beautiful airplane, will you be getting another plane?
Sync em up.
Looking for high quality clip on sunglasses. Where did you buy yours?
Love your videos and it’s sad to see her go but good luck with the sale.
I will have access to another one! More videos to come.
Long time pilot with 1,000 hours Aerostar 135 experience. I agree with everything you said except for one thing. The advent of large format moving map displays with terrain height warning is arguably the greatest safety feature ever installed in an aircraft. CFIT accidents are relegated to a vanishingly small occurrence. If I bought this, I’m sorry, but all those nice steam gauge navs would hit the scrap heap of obsolescence. Used to sell Diamond Stars with Garmin 1000s as well as new Mooneys also with the 1000s. Will never willingly go back.
Agreed. Having a great airframe to do with what you want for avionics is a good place to be. This is exactly what I expect the next owner to do. I wanted to put a G-500 and GTN 750 in as a bare minimum. At least the Sandel TAWS installed by the previous owner. My partner lost interest in the plane due to his mission changing. I couldn't convince him to upgrade the instruments. That will be for the next owner.
@@AerostarPilot Boy, this would be the airframe to do this on too! Love the engine driven AC. We had the old AC system. The belt blew up and made a real mess in the fuselage.
why that alarm sound?
Yes, that obnoxious buzzer. This is the alarm on the altitude alerter letting you are getting to the altitude you set it at or deviation from the set altitude.
I enjoyed your VLOGs. My Aerostars were labors of love. My airplanes took as good care of me as I took care of them. The finest twin I’ve ever owned and flown. The 600 great performer and fuel miser at 12,000’. The 601A out ran the earlier commanders, Beechcraft and Merlin I’s at a fraction of the fuel consumption at 25,000’. The 601B a tad slower than the 601A… But better landing performance with the wing extensions. Joined the airlines in the ‘80s. I knew it was an abuse to not fly the the plane that is better at home where it belongs… the sky. I enjoyed my time as a mentor pilot from the mid ‘70s through the late ‘80s. The closest airplane to the Aerostar is the Boeing 727… But that another story for another time.
My dad had one of the first Aerostars in the mid 70's. What a neat plane, looks like it was moving even sitting still. Have such great memory's with my dad in that plane.
Oh, my dream piston twin, if only I had the funds and places to fly to down here in AUS & NZL! It's a superb turbo piston rocket thanks to that small high performance wing, and lots of horses to pull it! Best wishes Eric. Cheers from NZL, David 😀
I hope you sell it soon captain, you can hear that if it hurts you to let it go, I thank you for all your videos and all your teachings because I applied them flying the Aerostar 700 and managed to improve a lot thanks
I am from a military background like you and I know that the love you have for your plane is unique... Greetings in December I am going to Port Angeles, if you still have your plane I will gladly pay for an hour of instruction
@@cap.meseguer8779 I will have another one to use some time this summer. I will put a short video on how it came to be that I was able to operate this aircraft as if I owned it when I actually did not, so stay tuned. There is an explanation in the interview series with my Dad towards the end of the last video.
Sweet looking plane
So I want one of you aware pilots to tell me all about how White hazy sky's is our new normal now and not because of the ongoing Geoengineering operation in full effect ..
Actually it is the result of many decades of bad forest management in Canada and the US.
Any updates on the certification process? I would love to have an aerostar jet, the wing mounted engines look so cool like a miniature airliner and if the cost and performance is good I would definitely sell my Merlin IIIB and buy an aerostar jet.
Give Jim Christy at Aerostar a call and see what he has to say. (800) 442-4242.
AEROSTAR ENVY
Please don't learn formation by being lead, this is in so many ways the WRONG way to learn and promoting this on youtube makes my skin crawl. Yours truly, pilot with a FAA endorsed formation card.
I agree. This mission was not really about flying formation but to get some photographs.
Great fun. Thanks for letting us enjoy it too 😊
Love the video. Around 10:30 on short final you retracted some flaps for landing. I've never flown an Aerostar to know if that is common practice in type, or saying that it's a wrong procedure but was taught to not change configuration on short final like that. Mind explaining your thought process, would love to learn something.
The flaps on the Aerostar are hydraulic. There are three positions with the selector. Up neutral and down. There is a position indicator that tells you where the flaps are set. 10, 20, 30 and down 45 degrees. There is no preselect. Normal procedure is once the flaps are where you want them, you put the flap handle back to neutral or off. What you perceived as putting the flaps up was actually putting the flap control in the off or neutral position.
@@AerostarPilot I went back, rewatched and zoomed in and see now. That is an interesting system on the Aerostar. I'm surprised there are no preselect notches like in most airplanes. I saw it and it made me think like huh why is he retracting flaps on short final, that does not seem smart but nope, I just did not know the system. Thank you for teaching me something today!
I see the gross weight increase. What the useful load on this plane?
A little over 2000#. With full standard fuel you can put 1000# in the cabin.
What???? Why?
